Tagesschau's new studio - controlled by Mosart

Germany's Tagesschau finally Mosart-launched

A year and a half after the initial launch date, ARD went on air with a completely new studio on Easter Saturday

In the middle of Easter, Germany's public broadcaster, ARD, went on air with a new studio and Mosart automation.

The Tagesschau is a very conservative newscast with a 60 years history. They have been reluctant to introduce a teleprompter, and they start the program by saying 'Good evening, Ladies and Gentlemen'. But things have changed quite a bit.

3D graphics, a 17 meter (56 feet) wide LED wall, robot cameras and not least Mosart has been introduced in a 23.8 million euro transformation. The planning started back in 2009, and the new set was built in 2011 and 2012. Since then, the production team has rehearsed and tweaked the technical setup to make it perfect for Tagesschau's 9 million viewers.

But the studio is not just for Tagesschau. It's for all ARD newscasts: Tagesthemen, Nachtmagazin and the newschannel Tagesschau24.

Still, history is not forgotten. The opener music is almost the same. There is a bell in the beginning, which is an actual bell in the basement triggered by Mosart through GPI. The music after the bell has been rerecorded by the NDR Symphony Orchestra.

Tagesschau is based in Hamburg at NDR, one of the regional broadcasters in the ARD network. The next Mosart step for ARD is an installation at Hessischer Rundfunk in Frankfurt.
